Getting to know

Miss Alcorn County

Alison Rhea Parson

What are your hobbies?
Singing, playing guitar, writing, tennis, crocheting, shopping, and traveling.

What makes you special and unique?
I don't think that there is any person in this world that can say they have walked a day in my shoes! My life has truly been filled with miracles and blessings. Not many people have seen the things I have seen, and I thank God everyday that He continues to bless me with such a beautiful life.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
In order to be irreplaceable...one must be different!! This always reminds me to pursue my own paths and stay true to the person God has made me. I truly believe that each of us are filled with special talents, but it is up to us to decide what we will do with them.

Name one thing you cannot live without.
I cannot live without my guitar!! It is such an outlet for me to express emotions, relieve stress, and cope with everyday life circumstances. It was passed on to me by my father...and I taught myself how to play.

What is the most valuable lesson you ever learned?
I've learned never to procrastinate and to always remain humble. Even the best need to prepare and practice!

Who is your most valued role model and why?
My mother is definitely my most valued role model. As far back as I can remember she has been the essence of what a true lady should be. She has taught me so many invaluable lessons and I can only hope to, one day, become the kind of woman that she is.

What was your most unexpected moment?
The most unexpected moment in my life to date was in September of 2006. I was canoeing with my friends when a storm swept through and forced us off of the water. As I was beaching my canoe a tree snapped in half and crashed down the cliff crushing me beneath. I was air-evacuated and sustained severe injuries to the head and body. This was a definitive point in my life and I knew I would never be the same. This unexpected moment taught me to value the life I have been given and cherish each moment that passes.

What is your workout routine?
I like to vary my routine. Sports, weights, and cardio are all a big part in keeping me entertained and healthy.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
Singing at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France was such a wonderful day! We were the only group to ever rehearse in the basement of the cathedral and the blending of cultures in the midst of the church was just breathtaking.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?
The best compliment that I ever received came when a young girls mother approached me and told me that her daughter really looked up to me. As we talked she told me that her daughter had very low self esteem. I had apparently encouraged her daughter to never give up her dream no matter what adversity she was faced with. The words that I shared through casual conversation ended up impacting a life. The mother told me that she hoped her daughter would grow up to be like me.

What is your secret wish?
My secret wish is to sing a duet with Faith Hill at the "Stars Over Mississippi" concert!! I absolutely love her music and what better place to join two Mississippi girls!

What was your most embarrassing moment?
As of now, I am lucky enough to not have an embarrassing moment to share. I am such a carefree person that it is hard for me to get embarrassed over the small things.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
My guilty pleasure is dark chocolate hands down!

What is your favorite movie and why?
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite movies of all time! I am such a romantic, and this story embodies every element of romance that you could possibly hope for!

What is your favorite color and why?
My favorite color is lavender. Even my walls are lavender! It has such a calming effect.

What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
Music is my complete and total relaxation. I play guitar, write music, and sing my little heart out! I also crochet and play tennis when the weather is right.

What would be your dream vacation or destination?
My dream vacation is on the islands of Santorini, Greece. It is such a beautiful place and the culture is rooted in history.

What do you like best about your hometown?
My hometown is very historic. I love the old-world charm of our town. I also love the festivals that we hold each year...especially the Slugburger festival! Nothing beats the taste of a Slugburger in your mouth on a hot summer day in July!

What do you like best about the state of Mississippi, besides our food & hospitality?
The history of Mississippi is phenomenal! We have so many stories and so many great leaders have come from our state. Our food and hospitality will win you over, and our history will keep you coming back!

What's in your CD player or on your iPod right now?
My CD player is playing Eva Cassidy "Wade in the Water".

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In ten years I see myself establishing my non-profit, securing a full-time songwriting career, and having a beautiful family to come home to.

Who am I?
I have always been an adventurous person! My friends can tell you that I am the hardest person to get a hold of because my life is so crazy! I have always known that I wanted to be part of the music industry, and as soon as my little feet would allow, I took off to make that dream happen. I have traveled all over the world now and I don't see myself slowing down any time soon!

I was involved in an accident a year ago that almost slowed me down. A tree fell from a cliff and crushed me beneath it. I barely survived and after months of rehabilitation I proved everyone wrong when I WALKED into school and completed my college degree. Everyone told me that it was impossible...but I knew better! Since then, I feel a need to use every second I am given in life. I came so close to losing mine and I want to make sure that I exhaust every ounce of talent that God has placed inside me.

My love of music and my passion for other trauma victims out there has sparked my desire to start a non-profit organization that will aid in the financial and emotional restitution for these families.

Tell us about your occupational experience.
I have worked in so many different places! Universal South, Southern Marketing Talent, YMCA, SMX, Reynolds & Reynolds law firm, and MTSU recreation center.

Tell us about your platform.
The Alison Parson Project was a benefit concert, started by personal friends, to bring financial relief to my family after my traumatic accident on the duck river. They raised several thousand dollars for my family. I could never explain how much it meant to us and what a difference it made in our lives at the time. I knew immediately after it was over that it was my purpose to continue this event for other families that were suffering with trauma in their lives.

The A.P. Project is designed to combine music and popular culture. After we are established as a 501c, we plan to work with members of our community to raise funds for selected families within our state. Our plans also include providing licensed professional counselors and support groups for the victims. This will aid in psychological examinations and emotional healing.

I never want anyone to suffer as I did. I want victims and families to know that they are not alone in their struggles.
