Getting to know

Miss Dixie

Kimberley Perry

What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include working out, studying and watching romantic comedies with my friends (while munching on Papa John's pizza!)

What makes you special and unique?
My parents have always said that being a miracle makes me special and unique. After several years of marriage they were told they would never be able to have a child. Happily, despite the odds, an exciting arrival took place after fourteen years!

What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have ever received is to always do my personal best. Success is not measured against that of other people, but by the progress made in one's own personal life.

Name one thing you cannot live without.
I absolutely cannot live without my weekly dose of Grey's Anatomy. Because Thursdays are my longest class day, coming home to a cup of hot cocoa and Grey's is a great way to end a stressful day.

What is the most valuable lesson you ever learned?
My father always says, "If it isn't edifying, don't let it come out of your mouth." This statement has instilled in me the desire to always be positive no matter what the situation.

Who is your most valued role model and why?
My most valued role model has to be Patch Adams, a tireless advocate for treating the patient and not the disease.

What was your most unexpected moment?
My most unexpected moment came when I received an e-mail notifying honors college students that we would have an opportunity to enroll in a class that would be responsible for preparing a white paper for the presidential debate to be held on the University of Mississippi campus. Needless to say, I jumped at the chance to be part of such a historical event.

What is your workout routine?
A combination of cardio, free weights, and ab circuits.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
My biggest accomplishment thus far has been the development of a program within the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College that focuses on awareness of medical research with an emphasis on diabetes. Participation in the program allows honors college students to accumulate their philanthropy hours while learning more about research.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?
"Kim has never met a stranger."

What is your secret wish?
My secret wish is to be a featured guest performer on my favorite television show.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
There were actually two. Both times, my roommate and I were seen sifting through our apartment complex trash bin -- once to find lost keys which later turned up in her coat pocket and a second time to retrieve her niece's toy I had accidently thrown away.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
My favorite movie is "The Guardian." It truly makes me believe that those who love us watch over us even when they're gone.

What is your favorite movie and why?
Turquoise. It is calming and soothing but also makes people feel happy and cheerful.

What is your favorite color and why?
I love to watch romantic comedies or relax by the swimming pool. I also work in a nap whenever I have an opportunity!

What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
I would love to tour Europe and visit all the wonderful places I've only read or heard about.

What would be your dream vacation or destination?
I would have to say the thing I like best is the people. I have lived in the same community my whole life, and though I have now moved to Oxford, I still keep up with several of my closest high school friends.

What do you like best about your hometown?
Although there are numerous things I like about my home state, I am very proud of the fact that even though Mississippi has one of the lowest per capita personal income rates in the United States, we consistently rank as one of the highest per capita in charitable contributions.

What do you like best about the state of Mississippi, besides our food & hospitality?
Although there are numerous things I like about my home state, I am very proud of the fact that even though Mississippi has one of the lowest per capita personal income rates in the United States, we consistently rank as one of the highest per capita in charitable contributions.

What's in your CD player or on your iPod right now?
Carrie Underwood's new CD "Carnival Ride"

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I hope to be part of a wonderful, loving family and a successful healthcare lobbyist on Capitol Hill.

Who am I?
I am typically a very positive person. I believe in looking for the good in people and situations. Working to achieve a healthy balance between family, school, and exercise is what helps to keep me grounded and focused. I have a passion for medicine and hope to promote research through my lobbying efforts in the future. When I have free time (which is seldom), I love to watch sappy girl movies and eat homemade cheesecake.

Tell us about your occupational experience.
My greatest opportunities have come in being able to job shaedow professionals in the medical field. This past year, I was afforded an opportunity to observe a open heart surgery. Watching someone go from a state of distress to preparation to live a normal life with a normal heart was remarkable. This really reminded me that life is short and every moment should be appreciated. Had it not been for the determination, dedication, and passion for medicine from these doctors, this patient's life could have been a whole shorter.

Tell us about your platform.
Tremendous strides are being made in the world of diabetes. I have a personal commitment to the promotion of diabetes research and awareness. My work is directed toward raising funds for those less fortunate. For over five years, my dad and I have been involved in numerous diabetes projects such as health fairs and fund raisers. Since the beginning of my time at the University of Mississippi, I have been able to take an organization that he and I have worked with and implant that program into my own honors college. I have truly been blessed.
