Getting to know
Miss Flowood

Katherine Barkett
What are your hobbies?
Singing, dancing, acting, juggling, bike riding, and hanging out with my friends and family.
What makes you special and unique?
My optimist personality makes me special and unique. I always try to look at life with a positive attitude. You will always see me smiling and I love to brighten up people's day. I feel you can make someone’s day just by smiling at them and being friendly.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have ever received came from my Grandmother, Loarine Simpson. She said we cannot control the circumstances in our life, but we can control our attitude. A positive attitude can overcome many obstacles. My grandmother is the most positive person I know. Also, "mind your mama" continues to be very good advice!
Name one thing you cannot live without.
I cannot live without my family and friends. I have been blessed with a loving and supportive family and many wonderful friends. I do not believe any of these people are in my life by accident, but rather have been placed in my life for a special reason. My family and friends have molded me into the person I am and the person I am becoming. My mother says, "I am a woman in training."
What is the most valuable lesson you ever learned?
The most valuable lesson I have ever learned is to never give up. If you want something bad enough you can accomplish anything. My dad tells me, "just go for it"! He always says that it's not always about winning. If you feel that you have given it your all and there was nothing to look back on, you are a winner within yourself and you have accomplished something great!
Who is your most valued role model and why?
My Memaw is my most valued role model. She has Parkinson's Disease, which makes even the simplest tasks difficult. She perseveres daily with faith and always has a positive attitude.
What was your most unexpected moment?
My most unexpected moment was when I won the Mississippi State Talent Fair competition. There were so many extremely talented people in the competition that I really never expected to win. I was totally shocked and will never forget that moment.
What is your workout routine?
My workout routine consists of mainly fun cardio workouts. I love riding my bike through Oxford, and it gets pretty tough with all of the hills (not to mention I do not have gears on my bike). Also, running and walking around Lake Patsy with my friends is always a blast!
What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
I feel like my biggest accomplishment to date is that I was able to adjust to college life without any major problems. I loved my high school years, and hoped I would like Ole Miss just as much. I have become very involved in my school and that is something I am proud of. There are six campus organizations that I participate in and I am love giving back to my school.
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
The biggest compliment I have ever received is that I am a genuine person.
What is your secret wish?
My secret wish is to be a sideline reporter on ESPN during football season. I love sports and always watch the girls interview coaches and players. It would be a dream to be out there one day reporting Eli's next big Super Bowl win!
What was your most embarrassing moment?
I do not have one particular embarrassing moment, but I do clumsy things alot such as tripping of falling down.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Cheese! I love cheese and I could eat it all day long.
What is your favorite movie and why?
Legally Blonde is my all time favorite movie. I feel as though I can relate alot to the character Elle Woods. She is blonde, loves pink, very girly, but smart on top of everything. The movie shows how you cannot always judge a book by it's cover and I completely agree with that statement.
What is your favorite color and why?
Pink! You can ask anyone that knows me and they could answer this question for you. Everything that I own is the color pink. When someone walks in my room they have to take a step back because of all the pink in it. Pink just makes me happy and I think it's a very girly color.
What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
Riding my bike around Oxford has become my new recreation this semester. It truly relaxes me. The town and campus is beautiful, especially in the spring. Just riding around always puts me in a good mood.
What would be your dream vacation or destination?
My dream destination would be Rome, Italy. It looks like such a beautiful place and there are so many ancient sites to see.
What do you like best about your hometown?
Flowood is my hometown, and it is just perfect for me. The city itself is growing constantly. We have a great school system, police department, shopping area, and great people as well. The people of Flowood are so hospitable and represent great Mississippians.
What do you like best about the state of Mississippi, besides our food & hospitality?
I love the geography of our state. We have such a beautiful state. I have traveled all over Mississippi and everywhere I have been has something unique and special about it.
What's in your CD player or on your iPod right now?
Right now Wicked is playing on my iPod. Even though it came out three years ago I never get tired of it. There is something about the music that I just love.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In ten years I see myself with a loving family and a job.
Who am I?
I am a sophomore at the University of Mississippi and I am so proud to be a Rebel. My passion is my school. I have been fortunate to become involved in several campus organizations such as Ole Miss Ambassadors, Athletic Ambassadors, Chi Omega Sorority, Diamond Girl, Concert Singers, and Student Spirit Committee. Giving back to my school is such an important issue for me because Ole Miss has already given me so much. I have made so many special friendships here that will last the rest of my life. The academics at Ole Miss is also outstanding and is helping me prepare for my future career in Marketing Communications.
There are so many different ways people can become participate at this college and that is such a special quality Ole Miss has. Our campus is so diverse. There is a place for everyone here and that is what I love about my school!
Tell us about your occupational experience.
The best job occupation I have had to this date would be umpiring summer league baseball with my Dad. He coached baseball for twenty-five years then started umpiring after that. One day he asked me if I would be interested in umpiring with him one summer. I laughed at first and thought he was kidding, but he was not joking around.
I will never forget my first game. I do not think I have ever been so nervous in all my life. Throughout the game I tried to stay calm and act as though nothing was bothering me. At one point in the game I made a call that was slightly questionable and the crowd started to yell at me. At that moment tears started rolling down my face and I thought I was going to run off the field. Even though I was upset, I kept going and acted once again as if nothing was bothering me.
As I did more games, my confidence rose and I stayed relaxed. Umpiring with my Dad has been such a special job for me because we get to spend quality time with each other. I love baseball and I love my Dad, so what more could you want in a job!
Tell us about your platform.
My platform is promoting volunteerism in young people today. I am convinced that young people today are becoming more and more absorbed in their own life and that they do not have time or take the time to help and work with others. We need to remember that the talents we have are on loan from God and we need to use them to work with and inspire others who are less fortunate. During the next year I hope to encourage other high school students to remember how important it is to give back to society.
I initiated and developed the first Rankin County Volunteer of the Year Award program. Since this was the first, I visited with the Rankin County Superintendent of Education to secure permission to contact the schools and initiate this new program. I contacted each school to invite them to participate and to receive their nomination. Then I contacted several businesses in the Rankin County area to secure funding for the prizes and trophy to be awarded. Meeting with business leaders and school officials to present my platform required a great deal of time and effort. I raised two thousand dollars in scholarship money that was presented to the recipients of this award. This proved to be an enormous undertaking.
