Getting to know
Miss Itawamba Community College

Kacy Lea Coleman
What are your hobbies?
Though I love the whole pageant scene. I do not share the same hobbies with the typical pageant girl. I enjoy being outside. I attend and watch sporting events. I love to play intramural sports at school or any pick up game of any kind. My family and I play board games all the time. My one true hobby is definitely music. I love music of any kind. Performing it, listening to it. Music so relaxing to me. I just love it.
What makes you special and unique?
Being 6’2" definitely helps me to stand out in a crowd! When I was younger, I used to be somewhat self-conscious about being the tallest girl in my class. Now I realize what a commanding presence I have thanks to my height, and that being tall is truly an asset!
What is the best advice you have ever received?
"Carpe diem" or "seize the day!" Life is short, and we need to take advantage of the opportunities that are offered to us each day. We can truly make a difference in our future by the choices we make in the present.
Name one thing you cannot live without.
Music is the air I breathe. It is my escape. It is my passion. Music provides an outlet for my creativity, and it is my mode of self-expression. Music speaks to me in a language that few can comprehend.
What is the most valuable lesson you ever learned?
"Anything worth achieving is not easily achieved." I certainly know from my personal experience that any success I have ever achieved demanded hard work and persistence. I am dedicated to my goals, and I am committed to pursuing my dreams.
Who is your most valued role model and why?
My mom is my role model because she is my rock. My father left our family at the time when I needed him most – during my adolescent years. At first, I mistakenly blamed my mother for his absence. As I matured, I realized that my mother was not at fault, but instead was the glue that held our family together. A modern day Wonder Woman, my mother single-handedly guided three teenagers through a maze of confusion to become incredible young adults. My mother has unselfishly sacrificed to ensure that we have every opportunity to succeed. I love my mother dearly and respect her. I pray that I too will someday be that strong.
What was your most unexpected moment?
My most unexpected moment occurred in 2005 when I was competing in the State Cheerleading Championship. After 6 months of practicing for 5 hours a day, I was anxiously awaiting the results of the competition. I can still hear the announcer as he proclaimed, "The 2005 3A State Champions are Amory High School Cheerleading Squad." The feeling at that moment was indescribable. We were even awarded Diamond Champion Rings and Medallions for our success!
What is your workout routine?
My present routine involves working out 6 days a week. I am focusing on cardio and weight training with an emphasis on abs. My favorite workout, however, includes my passion for music. Dancing is the best cardio available.
What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
In 2006 Amory High School’s drama team was invited to perform its musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Orpheum in Memphis, Tennessee. This invitation was special because we were the first high school to ever perform on the Orpheum’s stage. I had the honor of being the Narrator in this musical, and we had diligently prepared for seven months for the big day. It was a moment in time that changed our lives forever. Standing on that stage and gazing out to the beautiful, golden tapestry walls and red velvet seats while performing for a sold-out crowd was a once in a lifetime dream come true. Countless hours of exhausting practice came to fruition when we presented our masterpiece.
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
As a musician, the best compliment to me is when a member of the audience tells me that my performance made him or her cry. Sometimes the person adds that I also sent chills up the spine when I sang. It is very humbling to know that I can touch people with my musical talent.
What is your secret wish?
Performing on the stage of the Orpheum created an insatiable desire to entertain others with my music. At that moment I experienced clarity about my goals for the future. I want to someday perform on Broadway so that I may relive that amazing feeling every day for the rest of my life.
What was your most embarrassing moment?
Most embarrassing moment? Where should I start? My middle name should be Grace because I am constantly falling down and knocking over things. This particular embarrassing moment, however; was neither of those. I simply did not think before I spoke. ICC and Northeast choir were performing in the Ford Center at Ole Miss. While we were waiting in the practice room Dr. Taylor (Northeast's Director) told us that if our parents were not attending that they could listen to it on the radio. He said, " It will be on 94.5." Keep in mind there's about 300 people in this room. So at that moment I looked at my cell phone and saw that it was 2:43PM because I was going to call one of my friends so she could listen. Then, Dr. Taylor asked if there were any questions and I raised my hand in total silence and he said, "Yes?" I said, " Is that radio station on AM or PM?" YEA TOTALLY oblivious to the fact that its AM and FM!! So as everybody died out laughing and fell on the floor at my Blond moment, I felt like a total idiot. The remainder of the concert people were calling me PM!! VERY EMBARASSING!!
What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
My biggest guilty pleasure is Chinese food. I just love it.
What is your favorite movie and why?
My favorite movie without a doubt is "Steel Magnolias." The all-star cast of phenomenal women includes two of my all-time favorites, Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton. I was truly honored in 2000 when I had the opportunity to meet Dolly in person at Amory’s Entertainment for Education concert. Dolly is the same person whether on screen or in reality. I admire her kind nature and her ability to remain true to her roots.
What is your favorite color and why?
Although it is perhaps cliché, my favorite color is definitely pink. I like the way the color pink compliments my skin tone.
What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
I love to record myself singing because I can replay the recording to critique myself. This is my idea of meditation, and it helps me to relax.
What would be your dream vacation or destination?
I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii. All my life people have told me how beautiful Hawaii is. Also, I am a huge Elvis fan, and I would love to visit the islands simply because Elvis filmed several movies there.
What do you like best about your hometown?
Amory is well-known for its hospitality and its support of the youth. The local saying is, "Friday night, football games; Last one to leave town, turn the lights off!"
What do you like best about the state of Mississippi, besides our food & hospitality?
Although Mississippi is in the bottom three of the poorest states, we are ranked #1 in giving the most money to charities such as children’s hospitals.
What's in your CD player or on your iPod right now?
My iPod contains a mixture of music including Michael Jackson, Rascal Flatts, and Celine Dion. I know this is diverse, but I love each one.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I see Kacy Coleman in New York City on a Broadway stage, singing her heart out and making her dreams come true.
Who am I?
If I were asked to describe myself to the world in three words or less, I would say that I am a vivacious, creative performer. I love an audience. Entertainment is my world because I enjoy sharing my talent with others. My entire life has been a performance of some type. For nine years I concentrated all my efforts on becoming an athlete. I was a cheerleader, and played soccer, softball, and basketball. I was a performer even then but on the court or field instead of on the stage.
Although I entered college on a basketball scholarship, my heart led me to a different genre. Instead of listening to the constant cheering of the crowds at games, I longed to hear the applause of an audience. I changed my major to Performing Arts so that I could have the opportunity to ameliorate my talent and share it with others to inspire them as well.
I decided to enter the Miss Itawamba Community College Pageant in order to use my talents in a productive manner. Participants in the Miss America Scholarship Program are given the unique opportunity to have a voice in their community and their state through their chosen platform. I wanted to use my voice to help those who have experienced similar life circumstances.
I am a very social person who loves to meet new people and experience new adventures. I am a REAL person. What you see is what you get. I am not pretentious. I truly care about other people and empathize with their situations.
I am excited about my role as Miss ICC, and I am eager to begin my journey as I prepare for the Miss Mississippi Pageant. As I meet new faces and expand my horizons, I hope to influence the youth of Mississippi and to be a role model for them.
Tell us about your occupational experience.
My jobs are as diverse as my personality traits. I have been a waitress, and I have worked in Law Offices. I have also been a Work Study Assistant for the Band Director at ICC. My current job, however, is my most prestigious job thus far. My job is now to represent Itawamba Community College not only at the Miss Mississippi Pageant but also wherever I go.
Tell us about your platform.
Every year over one million children under the age of 18 will suffer the breakdown of their families as their parents divorce. Most of these children will have some negative experiences as they deal with the loss, anger, and fear that often accompany divorce. My goal is to enhance the lives of these children through improved communication and coping skills and the knowledge that they are not alone.
Having been a child of divorce, I have had the opportunity to share my story with a number of others on a one-to-one basis as they were undergoing a similar experience. We have worked on many issues, including eliminating feelings of guilt, learning how to deal with anger, and improving self-esteem. These positive experiences have inspired me to want to become an advocate for these children.
Because half of all children under the age of 18 are from divorced homes, I want to visit as many schools as possible and share my message of hope and encouragement to these children. I also want to lobby the state legislature to pass legislation requiring any parent in the process of divorce to attend a court-based 4-hour class (i.e. Parents, Children, & Divorce Program) on the effects of divorce on children. Moreover, I want to partner with Kids’ Turn, a non-profit organization helping kids and parents through divorce.
