Getting to know

Miss Mississippi State University

Corie Stanford

What are your hobbies?
Singing, antiquing, volunteering, yard sailing, shopping, hanging out with family and friends, crafts and going out to eat.

What makes you special and unique?
I think my personality sets me apart from others because I am able to not take life too seriously. I find importance in setting high goals and striving to be my best but also find humor in life and am able to enjoy each day and each opportunity for what it is worth.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
They say, "Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see." e must realize that it is not what we see or hear of others that we should be concerned with, but instead how we live our own lives.

Name one thing you cannot live without.
My FOOTIES! My feet stay cold all of the time and there is nothing that makes me feel as warm and toasty as my fuzzy footies. I just love them.

What is the most valuable lesson you ever learned?
Hard work pays off. If you set a goal and strive to achieve it you will be successful. Whether it is working hard to obtain scholarships to pay for college, winning the title of Miss MSU (the best University in the state of Mississippi), or working out to become healthier and more fit you are capable of achieving success. You just have to work for it.

Who is your most valued role model and why?
My most valued and most missed role model is Mrs. Margaret Young. She was not only my teacher and annual staff advisor, but more importantly my "other mother" and friend. She was one of those people who radiated a positive loving light. She never once complained about anything in life. I believe she was the most positive caring woman I have ever met. I hope that one day I will have made an impact on someone’s life as she has mine.

What was your most unexpected moment?
When I was asked to ride in the Liberty Bowl parade in Memphis, TN. It was such an exciting time for Bulldog fans and I felt honored to be the first ever Miss Mississippi State University to ride down Beale Street representing my university.

What is your workout routine?
Thirty minutes of cardio three to five times a week. Weight and body training three times a week and even occasionally water aerobics.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
Not having to pay a dime for my education. Whether it was test scores, grades, pageants, or campus involvement they have all played apart in funding my education. I feel this is an accomplishment and even more proof that hard work pays off.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?
I have been told many times in my life that I am a very happy and positive person. I’m usually always cheerful and upbeat. I feel it is a huge compliment when someone says, "Corie always sees the good in things."

What is your secret wish?
My wish and my dream is no secret. I want to be Miss Mississippi!

What was your most embarrassing moment?
I love to sing and dance and if I am breathing you can count on me doing one or both of those things all of the time. Once while I was with my friends I to choreograph a dance as I was walking down a flight stairs. At first it seemed like a fun idea until during one of my dance moves I missed a step and flew down the stairs. During my tumble I bruised my hip, skinned my hand and injured my pride.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
I love sweets. I love them so much I have a candy jar right beside my bed for easy access. I just have a killer sweet tooth.

What is your favorite movie and why?
Dirty Dancing. It was my favorite movie as a young girl and still is. I think part of it is because I have always enjoyed dancing and it is pretty much the best dance movie of all time. When I was younger I would watch it with my friends. Plus girls, you have to admit Patrick Swayze is hot in that movie.

What is your favorite color and why?
Pink! It is so bright and fun. Plus, bubblegum, Barbies and cotton candy are all pink!

What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
When I get a free moment I just like to curl up on the couch or in my bed and watch Lifetime. It is always nice to just relax and have a good laugh or a good cry and you can always count on Lifetime for that.

What would be your dream vacation or destination?
I would love to relax on the porch of an over water bungalow in Bora Bora.

What do you like best about your hometown?
How you can always speak to everyone. Even if you don’t know someone you always feel at home and apart of a close knit town when you go out.

What do you like best about the state of Mississippi, besides our food & hospitality?
The people and the fact that children everywhere use it when counting in hide-and-go seek.

What's in your CD player or on your iPod right now?
Everything from Classical, Rock, Country and Pop. There may even be some Spice Girls on there.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I hope to be a successful Pharmaceutical Sales representative as well as a devoted mother and wife.

Who am I?
I am a daughter, a sister, a Bulldawg and a Mississippi Girl who loves her family and friends. I love to laugh and I try to have fun in every situation I am in. I enjoy shopping and getting all dolled up but I also love putting my baseball cap on and heading outdoors to find "treasures" with my metal detector.

I seem to always be on the go but when I get the chance I love to nap. My roommate says she has never met anyone who likes to nap as much as I do. But I just enjoy curling up in my bed and snuggling with a stuffed animal. I find relaxation and comfort in it.

I love being involved in my school and community. I find it very rewarding to help others and feel I can make a difference no matter how big or small the gesture is.

Tell us about your occupational experience.
I have always been very active in my schools and communities and because of that I have not held many jobs. But because I have not held many "paying" jobs it does not mean that I have not gained much knowledge and experience from the organizations I have been involved in.

Over my lifetime through working with other people I have come to realize how people’s personalities differ. Anytime you work with others it is your responsibility to find a way to connect and get along with those around you.

Sometimes you want to do things all on your own, but it can often be more helpful to gain insight or help from others. Two minds are always better than one.

No matter what job, activity, organization, etc life leads you to you must always stay focused. Know why you are there, what you are doing, and always remember who you are.

Tell us about your platform.
Volunteering has always played a major role in my life but it was not until resent years that I realized the impact it had in making me the person I am today and the impact that it has on all children’s lives. As a mentor at my area High School I began to see the impact that I had on the students lives even as a young adult. The influence that not only adults but older children have on younger children is amazing, but is also often neglected. Youth Volunteerism reaps more benefits then will ever be understood. Children who volunteer make better grades, are less likely to participate in risky behaviors and more likely to become volunteers as adults. There is nothing but positive effects from Youth Volunteerism. It is my hope; that I can give as many children as possible the opportunity to not only help their communities, state, and country; but ultimately themselves!
