Getting to know
Miss Rankin County

Crystal Nicole Flores
What are your hobbies?
Dancing, scrapbooking, shoe shopping and attending Ole Miss sporting events!
What makes you special and unique?
In my 19 years I have never had a broken bone, stitches, or been hospitalized! My guardian angels did a great job when I was a kid!
What is the best advice you have ever received?
My dad has always taught me to believe in myself. I am typically very hard on myself and without his advice I know my accomplishments would be fewer.
Name one thing you cannot live without.
My planner! I am a very busy person with a terrible memory. If I do not write it down, I can almost guarantee the task won't get finished!
What is the most valuable lesson you ever learned?
The most valuable lesson I have learned is to never give up. I failed to make the middle school cheerleading squad and wanted to throw in the towel, but my mom would not let me. I auditioned for dance team and was successful. Through my perseverance I found a passion for dancing and learned the greatest lesson in my life.
Who is your most valued role model and why?
I have two, my parents. Since the day I was born they have worked to give me and my siblings a life they only dreamed of as they were growing up. They have instilled true values in each of us and have shown us the importance of family. I only pray that when I become a parent I will be half as great as they are!
What was your most unexpected moment?
Taking a picture with Josh Lucas! As I was walking back to my hotel room in New York City he walked out the back door of a theater!
What is your workout routine?
I spend two days a week conditioning and strength training with the Rebelettes. On the days I do not work out with the team, I go to the gym to get plenty of cardio!
What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
Becoming an Ole Miss Rebelette. I was twelve years old the first time I attended a football game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and it was then that I decided I wanted to be dancing right beside those girls on the field!
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
When I was a senior in high school I mentored a classroom of first graders. One day during recess a little girl in my class told me "I wish I had a big sister like you." This is by far the greatest compliment I have ever received because in that moment I realized I had done my job as a mentor by reaching out to this child.
What is your secret wish?
My secret wish is to be able to sing! I absolutely love to sing but unfortunately it is not a talent I possess.
What was your most embarrassing moment?
The on-stage question portion of competition has always been my least favorite, probably because I am not a fan of the unknown. In one preliminary I was asked a question regarding a famous Mississippian. My answer was Oprah Winfrey followed by an explanation. So what is so embarrassing about that? Well, in my anticipation to answer I sounded just like Donald Duck and said "Winfwey."
What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Chocolate! In any shape or form chocolate is certainly my indulgence.
What is your favorite movie and why?
My favorite movie is "Serendipity." It's the perfect movie for a girls night in!
What is your favorite color and why?
I love the color yellow. It always seems to put me in a great mood!
What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
For fun I love to play games with my little brother and sister, look through old photos with good friends and watch movies I haven't seen in a while!
What would be your dream vacation or destination?
My dream vacation would be to spend a week in Mexico. Because my father is a native, I would love to spend some time experiencing the lifestyle he had and learning more about my heritage.
What do you like best about your hometown?
I am from the Reservoir area and I love that everything I need is just minutes away. I live less than ten minutes from my old high school, dance studio, church, Wal-Mart and plenty of food and shopping!
What do you like best about the state of Mississippi, besides our food & hospitality?
Our fans! Win or lose I have noticed that here in Mississippi we have very devoted fans, especially the fans of the great University of Mississippi!
What's in your CD player or on your iPod right now?
The Across the Universe soundtrack. There is a song for every mood I have all on one disc!
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In ten years I see myself working with children as a speech pathologist and having a family of my own.
Who am I?
My family is by far the most important aspect of my life. I am the oldest of four children and I adore each of my siblings more than they can imagine! No matter how bad of a day I am having, I know I can count on one of them to make it better. Dancing is also an important part of my life because it is an activity I enjoy. When I am dancing I know I can express myself in ways that there are no words for.
As a freshmen at the University of Mississippi, I have just begun an amazing chapter of my life and I am beyond excited to watch the pages turn. I have always dreamed of helping children for a living; therefore, I have chosen a major in Communicative Sciences and Disorders. However, the greatest part about being at Ole Miss has been dancing in front of over fifty thousand fans who love their Rebels! Being active in my sorority and constantly meeting new people are also wonderful parts of my life as a student!
I am a self motivated person with many passions and dreams. But as a sister, friend, daughter, mentor and student, my goal is to simply be the best that I can be and to help others along the way.
Tell us about your occupational experience.
My parents have worked in the restaurant business for many years. They own two restaurants for a living so the business is something I am certainly familiar with. I began helping around my parents restaurant as young as ten years old. As soon as I was old enough to actually begin working I was waiting tables right away! I have been serving customers in my family's business for years now and continue to do so when I go home on the weekends. The life experiences I have gained from interacting with a variety of people are ones that could never be taught in a classroom.
Tell us about your platform.
Being the oldest of four children I have learned the importance of setting a good example. I never know when the kids are watching what I do or listening to what I say. If I say or do it, they usually follow right in my footsteps! As I have gotten older I have seen many children who lack a positive example in their life. This is why I have chosen Mentoring America's Youth as my platform.
I am committed to encouraging anyone and everyone to become a mentor. Imagine the difference that could be made if every person made an effort to reach out to at least one child in need. A mentor does not have to be the smartest in his class or the strongest on his team, he is simply someone who cares. At some point in our life we have all needed a friend, why not be a friend to a child less fortunate?
