The 2008 Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen Pageant began the final night of competition with the announcement of the top ten contestants in competition order. The field of twenty-nine was narrowed to the following contestants: Deep South, Mary Margaret Roark; West Central MS, Carsyn Byars; Hattiesburg, Scarlett Thomas; Madison County, Allie Odom; Northridge, Stephanie Stanford; Mid South, Laura Lee Lewis; New South, Morgan Burnett; Southwest, Kelsey Ann Jackson; Southern Magnolia, Shelby Corn and Jones County, Kimberly Page.
After competing in three phases of competition, which included Evening Gown, Talent and Sportswear the contestants were called out onto the stage to participate in the On-Stage Question category. The questions this year were submitted by Mississippi school teachers and dealt with a wide range of subjects such as underage drinking, guns in schools, teen sexuality, pregnancy, depression, musical influences on teens and more. Only the top five contestants were called to the center of the stage to answer questions. The final perfomances of the pageant followed and included Jasmine Murray's farewell.
The five finalists joined the cast on stage for the presentation of awards. Renea Foley presented the "Miss Congeniality" award (a $100 cash scholarship from Foley) Dixieland's Callie Rush. The overall talent award was also a $100 scholarship (from the family of Jasmine Murray) was next in line. Jasmine's sister, Andrea McMillin, was on hand to present the award. Proving how tough this year's talent competition was, there was a tie. The recipients of the award were West Central MS's Carsyn Byars and Northridge's Stephanie Stanford.
Jasmine Murray was honored next with a fur coat funished by Venue (Little Rock, AR) and presented by Keri Abernathy. Murray also accepted a bouquet of roses from her mother.
Miss Mississippi 2007, Kimberly Morgan presented roses to the fourth runner-up, Stephanie Stanford. Pam Smith of the Vickburg-Warren Chamber of Commerce presented a bouquet to the third runner-up, Kimberly Page. The Vicksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau's director, Bill Serrat was on hand to congratulate the second runner-up, Scarlett Thomas. Sheriff Martin Pace of Warren County awarded roses to the first runner-up, Allie Odom. And then there was one.
Morgan Lindsey Burnett was greeted by David Blackledge of the Miss Mississippi Corporation with a bouquet of her own. Burnett then stood patiently as Jasmine Murray placed the crown on her head and secured it for her first walk. Burnett, a senior at Northwest Rankin High School in Brandon, was cheered on by the crowd as she walked out on the runway. Her friends and family then sang "Happy Birthday" to their girl, who, as it turns out, was not only celebrating her win but her 17th birthday as well.
DVDs of this year's event are available from the Miss Mississippi Pageant website via a link at the top of the home page or from the "Tickets, Merchandise & More" menu option in the teen section. The DVDs are in high demand due to the overwhelming popularity and superior quality of this year's production.
